How blockchain can fight the rise of the surveillance state.

Can decentralized technologies preserve democracy? Waterhouse is going to share with you how the rise of the contemporary surveillance state has created an existential problem that we face today as a global society and then one possible solution that his current project is trying to tackle.

Orchid is helping build a new civil contract around a distributed marketplace for computation, storage, and bandwidth to provide the framework for a new form of digital citizenship.

Crypto Kitten Fundraiser

Crypto Kitten Fundraiser

Join a group of renowned cryptocurrency philanthropists at Node on Thursday, July 19, for a first-of-its-kind Crypto Kitten Fundraiser!

Cat Town, like cryptocurrency, is built on a foundation of innovation. They have programs in place to help other communities understand that more can be done to save cats who appear “unadoptable,” and to help them replicate their success. They reach tens of thousands of people every year, inspiring other rescue organizations to take risks, too. This Crypto Kitten Fundraiser will support Cat Town’s innovative work to help transform how shelters and rescue organizations perceive and help cats — all across the nation.

Cat Town leverages every dollar, so you can be sure your coins will save the lives of actual cats who have no chance without you.

Donations made directly in crypto will be tax free, and tax forms will be made available for all donations. If you would like tax information, or to make a pledge of cryptocurrency to Cat Town (to be donated before the 2018 year end), please contact Quinn White at quinn@cattownoakland.org.

The evening will include specialty cocktails served out of ceramic kitties, and ACTUAL kittens to play with! Be part of a truly unique celebration to rescue shelter cats in need — and maybe even redeem cryptocurrency’s reputation in the process.

Happy Hour and Pitch Deck

Pitch Deck is a game about convincing your friends to invest in the most ridiculous startups imaginable.

Fred Benenson, the creator of Pitch Deck, who was also the second employee at Kickstarter and their VP of Data will join us in sharing some laughs and some drinks.

You all play clueless entrepreneurs and venture capitalists in a world where centaurs wear Crocs, Girl Scouts sell Adderall door-to-door and people rent their doomsday bunkers on Airbnb.

Each round, everyone combines a Pitch card from their hand with a Company card on the table to create a new business. Then everyone makes a quick elevator pitch describing why you should invest.

There are two winners: the person who pitched the most valuable company and the person who invested the most in that company.

Fred Benenson, the creator of Pitch Deck, who was also the second employee at Kickstarter and their VP of Data will join us in sharing some laughs and some drinks.

Fred has also worked at Y Combinator, Creative Commons and taught at ITP, where he graduated in 2008.

Doors open at 5:00PM for happy hour; games begin at 6PM.

Holochain: The Human-Centered Internet

Holochain: The Human-Centered Internet

Do you feel like the web is pulling you in a thousand different directions every day? Most of us do. We are pinged constantly by applications whose business models depend upon getting us addicted to their services. This is an internet that stalks us rather than serves us, and it is a side-effect of the way the web works today.

Holochain is a new way of building and running truly peer-to-peer applications that don't require web servers because they operate entirely on the devices of the users themselves, and put people, rather than companies, in control. As the internet begins to revolve around people instead of companies, what will that make possible?

Moving from Apps as Places to Apps as Ways of Speaking:

The internet today revolves around applications. Everyone feels pulled in ten different directions at once as each of these “social spaces” pings us with notifications in an attempt to addict and distract us into spending more time in “their territory.” Rather than putting each application in the middle, Holochain is “turning the internet inside-out” by putting each person in the middle. This shift towards treating applications not as places, but instead as shared grammars, enables new more vibrant patterns of collaboration. The resulting cross-pollination unlocks innovation and creates communities that learn, adapt and thrive.

Tackling Complexity: Why Holochain is creating an ecosystem, and not just a network.

Today, each of us is pulled in a ten different directions every day. We are pinged constantly by applications whose business models depend upon getting us addicted to their services so that we spend more of our time with them. But this is a consequence of how web applications (and even most "blockchain" applications) are built today. If the internet revolved around people instead of companies, what might that make possible? Holochain is a new pattern for building not just truly distributed applications but goes beyond that to foster empowering and adaptive software ecosystems.

Matthew Schutte, Director of Communications, Holo.host

Matthew works on Holochain, a new way of building and running applications that puts people in control of their digital lives. Holochain enables a new pattern of communication that empowers individuals, fosters trust and helps build thriving communities. Inspired by the design patterns of natural living systems, Holochain applications are faster, more scalable and 10,000 times cheaper than blockchain approaches.

Mapping on Blockchain - Creator and CEO of MAP LTD

As we know, an accurate 3D map of the world has purpose beyond safe autonomous vehicle navigation and cross-platform persistent augmented reality content; it can facilitate innovation, democratize the development of location-based applications and services, and establish a transparent reading and writing of our Earth’s information. Mapping on the blockchain is a way for us to restore agency and ownership in the creation and usage of our maps, without third party control or censorship. Community cartography can be unreliable and impractical, but with MAP, community cartography is an easy and intuitive process. Anyone can be part of creating the open map of the future.

Arnaud Dazin is the Creator and Chief Executive Officer of MAP LTD. Arnaud is an engineering architect whose work in video games, healthtech and adtech has garnered him international recognition. He has been at the forefront of free-to-play’s rise for both PC and mobile, most notably as an early employee at mobile games giant Storm8, a network with over a billion downloads and 50 million monthly active users. He has an active interest in software development, robotics, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and augmented reality. This deep appreciation for technology fostered a longstanding dream of creating MAP—a decentralized, dynamic distributed layer of the world around us—and compelled him to make his vision a reality. As the CEO of ADVR, Inc., Arnaud leads an existing business towards building a future where digital data can be embedded in virtual and augmented worlds. Arnaud has given international talks in Asia, Europe, and in the USA on scaling products, virtual reality, augmented reality, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain.

Blockchain Replacing Trust with Proof. Pierre Wolff from Tierion.

Blockchain Replacing Trust with Proof. Pierre Wolff from Tierion.

Much of our lives and the systems we depend on have relied on a significant level of trust. However, over time our collective trust in many organizations (be it public, private or governmental) we have been interacting with regularly, has slowly been eroded. Heck, the birth of Bitcoin gets its roots from our collective loss of trust in our monetary systems. While in the political realm trust has always come in short supply, we have reached new heights in distrustful behavior in industry, that shows an apparent deterioration of our system of checks and balances. With the ushering of blockchain technology, we see the ushering in of proof in the form of mathematics and intricate processes as finally a viable piece of the new trust puzzle. We are developing ways to operate where trust is enforced through proving the veracity or quality of data or information. Tierion is playing a small role in this larger ecosystem.

Pierre Wolff is a 20+ year veteran of Silicon Valley as a business strategist, startup advisor/mentor, and people-connector in the tech industry, who is currently working on several blockchain and cryptocurrency related initiatives in several industries exploring token launches. After 2 years as an advisor, he recently joined the team at Tierion, a company that has created a global platform for anchoring and verifying any data, file or process to the Bitcoin blockchain. There he heads up business and corporate development efforts as well as manages various internal operations functions. Pierre is also a regular participant at various blockchain and cryptocurrency events as a moderator or panelist, discussing regulatory, business model, and technology suitability issues.

Wine will be provided.

Talk starts at 9pm. Followed by live DJ-sets.
